Digital Agenda June 27: Bomb Calorimeter Lab

Standard: MS-LS1-7. Develop a model to describe how food is rearranged through chemical reactions forming new molecules that support growth and/or release energy as this matter moves through an organism.

Objective: Students will explain that energy from calories is released in the form of heat when food molecules are rearranged by completing the calorimetry lab with a 3 or better, according to the success criteria.

Criteria for Success:
4: Lab report is detailed with full sentences. Group is working collaboratively and everyone is on task with no prompting from group leader or teacher. Calculations for Temperature change and Heat Energy are correct.

3: Lab report is complete with less detail and mostly full sentences. Group is working collaboratively and mostly everyone is on task, with minimal prompting from group leader and teacher.

2: Lab report is mostly complete. Half or more of the group members have been distracted, and needed a lot of prompting from the teacher.

1: Lab is mostly incomplete, or there is nothing written. Materials have been played with and not used for their intended purpose, and the group needed a lot of prompting from the teacher to stay on task.
